I Developed My Art Making Skills
Before this unit, I had only done mixed media with one to two layers. I did two mixed media pieces in Art I, both only having newspaper clippings and tissue paper. This time, I had access to much more supplies that I could use. I learned about layering and using a gel medium. I had to be a lot more creative than I usually am when doing a project in art. There was endless possibilities on a color scheme, theme, number of layers etc. After doing this mixed media piece, I have a better idea of how to layer different art supplies. My skills doing mixed media have definitely improved after doing this project.
I Take Risks
The first layer of tissue paper I was going to stay with a red/orange almost fiery theme. When I started the second layer, it was overwhelming trying to layer newspaper, tissue paper, etc. to look aesthetically pleasing to myself. The theme I wanted to do of fire didn’t work when I couldn’t find the materials to really portray a fiery theme. Towards the end of the project, I was just putting colorful ribbons, buttons, etc. on the board to fill up the space.
Being the second time I had done mixed media but the first time doing more than two layers, I was nervous. I thought it was going to be effortless and easy to choose what to put. It was a lot harder than I expected to choose materials that would look nice with the color scheme I was doing.
I Reflect
I didn’t really care about the placement of the tissue paper on the first layer because I knew it would be mostly covered up in the next layers. After that however, every time I put something new on my piece, I would step back and look at it to make sure I had put it where it looked the best. I usually set the materials I was about to put on the piece on the board to make sure it was where I wanted. A lot of times though, I had already put the gel medium on when I realized I wanted to change the position.
I overall don’t really like how my mixed media piece looks. I think it looks messy and I know that’s how it’s supposed to be, but I still don’t think it’s my best project. A lot of people had themes to their mixed media pieces or a specific color theme that flowed throughout the whole thing. I, however, don’t think mine has an obvious theme or a particular color scheme. I think it looks much better in the viewfinder than as a whole.
