I originally was going to do a watercolor sunflower for my up close nature. While doing a test sunflower, I realized it was going to be difficult to show the contrast of lights and darks. I found a few pictures of shells online and decided to experiment with it. I used just watercolor for one section, watercolor pencil for another, colored pencil for another, etc. This is the second and more finalized sketch I did of the shell. I decided to use watercolor pencils because I liked the contrast I could create with the reds, oranges and yellows. This is an in-progress picture of my final painting. This is after the second day of working on it. I really like the watercolor pencils and I'm happy with how it looks so far.

I didn't finish my can but this is what my oil pastel lemonade can looked like. Blending the colors and using the right angles on the pastels were kind of difficult to control. This is the chalk apple drawing I did. We learned about layering colors and blending with your finger. We also learned about overblending. The left apple is my first watercolor apple. The second apple was the one I used techniques with. I tried wet on wet and salt but it didn't turn out as I had wanted. We also learned transparent layers, dry brush and resist. I didn't get to do the fourth apple but these are the three colored pencil apples I drew. We had to blend the colored pencils and control the pressure we put on the paper. I Create Original Art
For my perspective project, I used my own photos to decide what my final would be on. I narrowed it down between two pictures I took while in San Francisco but decided on this picture from an alley in Chinatown. Watching a picture that I took come to life in a drawing was very cool to see. My source of inspiration was the first photograph in the two. While I tried to stay as true to the original as possible, there were some things I had to change. Some of the very fine details I decided to leave out because it didn't add anything special to the drawing. There were also details that I simply just couldn't draw. I Developed My Art Making Skills Although I didn't end up using pen and ink, I discovered ways to fill in empty space including hatching and stippling. I never really did any pencil drawings before this one so I learned a lot about adding values and making sure not to go too dark to fast or too light. If we did another pencil drawing, I think knowing what I do now after doing this first project, my second pencil drawing would be much better. In Art 1, I did sketching and shape shading but the lessons we did in Art 2 so far have furthered my understanding on the importance of shading and values. My drawing skills have improved so much after doing this perspective drawing. I learned a lot while going through obstacles which really helped me grow. I Take Risks When I heard we were doing a pencil drawing, I was already nervous about it. In Art 1, I tried to avoid doing pencil drawings because I was never really good at them. I didn't have much experience so this whole project was basically one huge risk for me. The details in the photograph made me a little timid to do them but once I finally got the small details in, I realized that my drawing was finally coming together. If I had avoided the details, my perspective drawing would not have turned out the way it did. I would consider pencils to be a new material to me. As I said before, I never really used pencils in art besides doing sloppy sketches so this was a huge step up from what I was doing before. The idea of layering the pencil to create extreme values was also very new to me. When I started the drawing and adding values, I made some of the features way too dark and some way too light. I had to find a balance between the two that would make my art more realistic. After stepping back and looking at my drawing as a whole, there are places where the darks are too dark and lights are too light. I think realizing what I need to improve on will help me in the next units to come. The first few days of art, we made value charts using pencil and pen and ink. We also learned new techniques with pen and ink including hatching, cross hatching and stippling. Once we made value charts, we shaded in various shapes. Making the value charts and testing out pencil and pen and ink helped me decided what I wanted to use for my final project.
After doing three thumbnail sketches of all different angles, I decided to make my final on the close up of the balconies. I didn't add as many details as I wanted to to my final sketch. From doing this sketch, however, I finalized the angles for the building and the placement of the windows, balconies and other components that make up the building. Today, I started adding values. I know the windows are going to be the darkest shade on the final piece so I started adding the very dark values. After doing the darkest parts of the windows, I started adding values to the bottom of the building. |
