I Create Original Art
My painting wasn’t based on a single picture. When I looked up “close up nature” on Google for inspiration, I saw a shell and was initially very discouraged from attempting it. From the mediums I had available to me, I didn’t think any would make a good-looking shell. Once I researched more pictures of shells, I thought watercolor would look really nice and would be the easiest to blend.
My sources of inspiration were multiple pictures of random shells and the patterns inside of them. Once I knew what pattern and shape I wanted the shell, I had to find the color scheme. All the pictures I found had very dull colors and I wanted to make the shell more vibrant. I decided to use reds, oranges and yellows. These colors would still make the shell look “realistic” but it wouldn’t be dull.
I Take Risks
In Art I, I had worked with watercolor before so I was originally going to use that medium for my final. When I practiced the shell with watercolor, I didn’t like how it turned out. The lights and darks weren’t light and dark enough and I wasn’t happy with it. I didn’t want to use the oil or chalk pastels so I decided to try out the watercolor pencils.
I could’ve stuck with the watercolor to be safe and made a less-than-satisfactory painting. Instead, I decided to use the watercolor pencils. I had never used them prior to doing this piece. I didn’t know how much pressure to add or how much blending I needed to do with the pencils and with the water. It was a very new experience but I’m glad I decided to use the watercolor pencils. It made the colors pop and blend much better than the watercolors.
I Solve Problems
There’s one section on my final piece that is much darker than the others. In that section, I tried to layer the colored pencil on water but it came out a lot darker than I thought it would. I tried to blend the red but it didn’t blend like the other sections I had done before. It was kind of a setback since I wasn’t sure if I should do that to all the sections before so it wouldn’t stand out or just keep going like I was before. I decided to just ignore that one section and continue the techniques I was doing before.
Once I had completed the other sections, I tried to go back and lighten that section but it didn’t work. I also tried to darken the other reds in the shell but the effect didn’t turn out as I wanted either. I tried everything I could think of before I just decided to let it be. I still really like how the shell came out, that one section just was a huge setback.
