I Developed My Art Making Skills
Before doing this project, I had never done printmaking before. It was different than anything I had ever done in Art I. I was initially intimidated doing this project because it was such a different kind of art. I had to get the hang of printing and carving before it really got comfortable. During this project, I learned obviously how to do print-making but I also learned that I can’t judge my artwork until the end. I might have done a really good print but the next layer might have not been lined up. I couldn’t pick the best prints until after the very last layer was printed.
I Solve Problems
I did have some problems during the printmaking process. Between the yellow and green, I accidentally cut out a piece that I was supposed to keep. I tried to think of ways that I could fix the mistake because it would be very obvious. I decided that I just had to leave it. It wasn’t a huge mistake but if you look in the top right corner, there is a random yellow piece that should’ve been green.
My biggest problem, however, was the sky. In all my prints, there are random lines in the sky where the print caught the ink. In some prints, it’s worse than others but no matter how much I cut away, it would still show. I had to make sure to not press down on the area too hard or the random lines of color would show up. I fixed this problem by doing two test prints to be sure that the slivers were as small as possible. From far away, it’s not as obvious which is good and as I did more colors, the lines got much less noticeable.
I Reflect
I started to step back and look at my prints overall after I had printed the second color. I did white first but I didn’t see it coming together until I had the white and yellow printed. I started to see the details that I cut away. After these prints I also started to get the hang of cutting the linoleum. I was nervous the first few times knowing what to cut away and what to keep.
Before I did my first print, I had already watched other people start printing. Something I didn’t realize I’d have to think about is how I was going to physically print: vertically, horizontally, put the paper on the linoleum, put the linoleum on the paper then flip it etc. I tried different ways but printing horizontally helped me line up the print the best. I also had lots of detail on the side that I could line up with. Having the sky cut out since the first print made it much easier to lay the linoleum on the paper. The hardest part was probably having to flip the paper so the linoleum was on the bottom, rather than the top.
Overall, I’m pretty happy with how my prints came out, especially because it was my first time doing it. This was probably one of my favorite projects we’ve done.
